LONDON — British drugmaker Pfizer has announced it plans to sell the little blue pill Viagra to other drug makers, with Pfizer CEO Ian Read also promising the deal.
“Viagra, as a brand-name drug, has a lot of goodwill,” Read told reporters.
Read said Pfizer had spent $4.1 billion on the drug in 2017, but that it is now planning to sell the drug at a lower price to more drug makers.
The drugmaker said in a statement that it is “modifying and expanding its plans to make Viagra more widely available to physicians and patients for use in the United States.”
Pfizer’s $4.1 billion acquisition of Schering-Plough Inc. of New York resulted in it becoming the first of its own drugs to be approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration.
Viagra is still on patent, and the patent is expected to expire in December 2020.
Read said Pfizer will pay $4.5 billion to settle patent litigation, which is pending with the FDA over the drug’s use for impotence. Schering-Plough will also pay $3.5 billion to resolve the patent battle over the pill’s effectiveness.
Read said Pfizer is a “major shareholder” of the company, with its financials up $13.5 billion since the acquisition.
